UVA Writing Center Policy on Generative AI
The UVA Writing Center recognizes generative AI tools pose both risks and benefits to learners engaged in writing projects. (See the MLA-CCCC Joint Task Force on Writing and AI Working Paper for a detailed accounting of the potential risks and benefits of generative AI for students, faculty, and other stakeholders.) At the same time, instructors’ experiences with, approaches to, and policies on the use of generative AI in writing assignments can vary widely across the university.
Therefore, students are welcome to discuss their use of AI tools during writing center consultations provided that the use of those tools do not violate course, university, or other policies related to the writing project. (For example, application materials may prohibit the use of generative AI tools.) All work submitted for assignments should reflect the student’s own understanding and abilities, and if AI-generated content is included, it must be appropriately acknowledged in accordance with the UVA academic honesty policies.
Writing consultants are not experts in AI and should not be expected to provide in-depth guidance on these tools. Instead, consultants are experts in working with writers and helping students develop their own skills and approaches to writing. We encourage faculty and students to refer to the FAQs about Artificial Intelligence by the Provost Office for additional guidance.
